1. The Road to Hell....

"The Road to Hell was paved with good intentions."

I'm curious to know how all of you interpret this quote.

Now for God's sake, please don't anyone on here take this personally. I am hoping to keep this clean and philsophical and would appreciate responses that do not include using examples from this board. I'm sure we have enough people in our 'real life' who have professed to have gotten in our business with good intentions that made things go to hell.

My take is this: *but it's not solid and is therefore open to debate..no feelings will be hurt is such debate*

Good intentions can cause chaos/hell because the intent is in the mind of the person who is intending and the interpretation of that intent is in the mind of the object of those intentions.

Personal example from my family:

After my mother died and left a neat stash of cash behind, my brother- who had her will in his possession and was listed as executor- decided not to probate it because he didn't want any bill collectors to get involved as they would need to be notified if the will were probated.

I wanted assurance from brother that what he was doing was not going to get me caught up in fraud because as I understood it, all heirs would be treated equally in any fraud case brought against our mother's estate. My good intentions were to keep my own nose clean.

Brother, however, read my intention as me wanting to cause him trouble. And he so accused me of that.

so in retaliation for his accusation I reminded him that I could indeed cause him trouble if I wanted to by going to the courts and telling them he was in possession of a will that he was listed executor on and refused to probate it. I used this remark to illustrate to him that I was not interested in causing him trouble...because I could if I wanted to....but all I wanted was assurance that what he was doing wasn't going to come back on me.

That intention then led brother to go around telling everyone I threatened him with court action and wanted him to go to jail.

Now the family didn't forget these things brother said I did...especially the part about me wanting him to go to jail....so at a time later on when one of brother's supporters, my other brother, thought he could land me in jail for something, he tried it! He didn't get anywhere with it though because his reasoning was as off base as the lie brother #1 told him in the first place.

Funny thing is though, that brother #2 could get in all sorts of trouble for how he went about trying to get me arrested. I still hold the ball on that one even as I don't intend to ever use it against brother #2. I don't think he was being mean, just gullible to what brother #1 said while at the same time having good intentions to help sister in some mess she was in that she blamed on me that sounded like I needed to be arrested.

Part 2 of my take on good intentions then is this:

Good intentions are not ever good intentions if anyone is hurt in the process. They are acts of vengence in the form of false light = the road to hell.

Can't believe no one else has any ideas!

OK then...here's another one of mine....

The Road to Hell is paved with Good Intentions when a person claiming good intentions refuses to recognize that those good intentions were only good for the person having them....and then that person gets secretly mad when they don't get their self serving way and then turns unexplainably vicious.

Hi Vil - I think that maybe it is when someone thinks/says something that they think is good for the other person when really it's what they want. Maybe that is the same thing you are saying. I guess I mean when they impose their will on you thinking it is for your own good. That would be O.K if it's what you want but if not then they should not push their views on you because I think that is very wrong.
