Simplified Digital Interface Using the PCI Bus

The aim of this project was to create a simplified digital interface using the PCI bus. The simplifications were required to allow efficient yet simply use of current high-speed PC based interface technologies. An FPGA based, PCI add-on card was used allowing rapid prototyping of hardware interface designs. Initial set-up of the card was lengthy due to minimal user support and documentation but it proved to be a useful and well designed tool. A simply yet effective interface was created to demonstrate digital I/O usage and control of a digital to analogue converter. This project has shown that an FPGA can be used as a PCI interface plus provide auxiliary functionality. Having created a solid foundation and understanding it is now possible to use the equipment to conduct more extensive research into the usage of the card.
